What a Baikonur tour actually costs: what's included, and what isn't

The headline numbers:

• Baikonur launch expedition — from €1,750, three to four days. The recommended four-day version is €2,500.
• Baikonur between launches** — €900, three days.

For a trip that puts you inside an active spaceport while a rocket is prepared to leave the planet, that is less than most people assume. The catch is not the tour price. It is everything the tour price does not contain, and one line in particular.

What is included

The same on both programmes:

• Hotel accommodation — usually the Tsentralnaya, or alternatives
• Guide services throughout the tour
• Museum admission
• The spaceport pass
• Photography and video permission
• Daily breakfast
• All ground transport within the trip

Two of those deserve more attention than a bullet gives them.

The pass. This is not an administrative fee. It is access to a controlled-access military-heritage site that is not issued to private individuals at all — you cannot buy it separately and you cannot obtain it yourself. Functionally, the pass is the product. Everything else is logistics arranged around it.

Photography permission. On a controlled site the default runs the other way. A specific photo and video authorisation is part of the package; without it the camera stays in the hotel.

What is not included

• International flights, and travel to Baikonur. The dominant cost for most visitors.
• Lunch and dinner. Breakfast is covered; the rest is not.
• Souvenirs and personal spending.
• Insurance.

The travel line, which is the real budget

Baikonur has an airport of its own, Krainiy, with effectively no scheduled service — mostly charters from Moscow for cosmodrome staff and organised groups. Plan as though it does not exist.

Two workable routes, at quite different price points:

Via Kyzylorda (KZO). The nearest airport with regular flights, 240–255 km from Baikonur. You will typically fly into Almaty or Astana first, then connect. Ground transfer from Kyzylorda.

By rail to Tyuratam. The station sits beside the city, with trains from Almaty and Astana. Kyzylorda to Baikonur is about 3 hours 20 minutes by train — the cheapest leg by a wide margin, and a genuinely interesting one across the steppe.

Buy flights after your date is confirmed, never before. Launches slip, and a non-refundable long-haul ticket against the original date is the most avoidable loss in this whole trip.

There is no visa cost to add: citizens of around 56 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and all EU states, enter Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 30 days.

Why the range runs from three to four days

The versions differ in more than length.

Three days. Arrive, launch day, depart. You see the launch, but everything around it is tight.

Four days — €2,500, and the one we recommend. The difference buys slack. If the launch slips by a day, which happens routinely, the trip absorbs it instead of collapsing. You are paying for resilience, not for an extra excursion. On a trip whose entire purpose is one event that may move, that is the most valuable €750 in the budget.

€900 versus €1,750: an honest comparison

The cheaper trip is not the worse trip, and it is worth being straight about that.

€900, between launches, gets you more of the cosmodrome: the Museum of the History of the Baikonur Cosmodrome and City, Gagarin's gazebo on the Syr Darya, Gagarin's Start — Site No. 1, where Yuri Gagarin left the planet on 12 April 1961 — the hangar with two Soviet Buran shuttles, and the Energia dynamic test stand. Three days, available year round, no date to hold and nothing to slip.

€1,750 gets you all of that plus a launch — and minus the certainty. The date can move, the platform holds 400 people, and the town's hotel stock is fully committed during launch week.

So the premium buys one event lasting a few minutes, which is the event everything else exists for. But if your goal is to see the spaceport rather than a liftoff, the inter-launch tour objectively delivers more for less. It is a different product, not a downgrade.

Why 400 seats affects what you pay

Indirectly, but really.

The viewing platform holds 400 people per launch. Baikonur has seven hotels and roughly 700 rooms. The complex received more than 11,000 visitors in 2025, and more than 7,500 people watchedlaunches between January and June 2026.

In June 2026 Kazakhstan cut permit processing for foreign tourists to ten days. The paperwork got faster; the platform did not get bigger. Scarcity moved from documents to seats — and scarcity always shows up in what is available rather than in the list price. On a popular crewed date, the constraint you hit is not budget but inventory.

The practical consequence when comparing operators: compare what is genuinely available on your date, not just the number on the page.

Baikonur is the most accessible entry point of the set. Vostochny costs more mainly because of distance — the Amur region is a long way from anywhere. Wenchang is structurally more expensive: a different country, a flight, and a group capped at ten.

For scale, a four-day launch expedition at €2,500 sits below what a comparable bucket-list week costs in Iceland, Japan or the Galápagos — and none of those involve standing on an accredited line while a crewed rocket lights.

Building the real budget

1. Programme price — from €1,750, or €900 between launches.
2. International flights to Almaty or Astana, return.
3. The connection to Kyzylorda, or the train to Tyuratam.
4. Lunch and dinner for every day except the launch-day lunch.
5. Insurance.
6. Slack for the backup window — in calendar days as well as money.
7. Souvenirs and personal spending.

Items 2 and 6 are the ones people forget, and they move the total more than anything else on the list.
